History books tell us that the city of Rome was set up in 152 B. C. It's a fact，however，that by 100 A. D., Rome was the centre of a big empire. I always felt sorry for the people in wheelchair. Some people，old and weak，cannot get around by themselves. Others seem perfectly healthy，dressed in business suits. But whenever I saw someone in a wheelchair, I only saw a disability，not a person.

Then I fainted at Euro Disney due to low blood pressure. This was the first time I had ever fainted，and my parents said that I must rest for a while after First Aid. I agreed to take it easy, but  as I stepped toward the door，I saw my dad pushing a wheelchair in my direction!     Deciding what to wear in the morning is a challenge for some people.We often worry about what others will think of us because of our clothes.  But researchers are beginning to think that our clothing has an equally powerful effect on how we see ourselves.

    Scientists Adam Galinsky and Hajo Adams report that there is science behind our style. In their research，Galinsky and Adams had some participants(参与者)wear white lab coats similar to the ones scientists or doctors wear. Other participants wore their normal clothes. The participants took a test that surveyed their ability to pay attention.  In the experiment，participants saw cards with different-colored words on them. They had to say the color of the word they saw，not the word itself. The people wearing the white lab coats said the correct color of the word more often.

    Galinsky and Adams think that the white coats made the participants feel more confident and careful.  The researchers also believe that other kinds of "symbolic" clothes can influence the behavior of the people wearing them.  A police officer's uniform or a judge's robe，for example， increases the wearer's feelings of power or confidence.  And in workplaces that have a dress code， "symbolic" clothes may also affect how well employees do their jobs.

    Fashion blogger Jessica Quirk believes that our clothes greatly affect how we feel about ourselves.  According to Quirk，"There is joy and luck and confidence in what we wear. " On her blog called "What I wore，" Quirk posts a photo of what she's wearing every day.  She says that people should pay more attention to what they wear.  For example，we should choose a look that makes us feel more creative and happy.  One way to do this at work is to "dress up for the exciting job we want，" she says，"not the boring job we have. " Another way is to wear special clothes that mean something to us.  For example，Quirk wears one special pair of shoes to all her important meetings.  They are her "lucky" shoes.

    Death Valley，one of America's great national parks，is a place of stiange and silent heauty. As beautiful as this place is, its name provides evidence(迹象)of very real danger.  Death Valley is a land of beautiful yet dangerous extremes.  There are mountains that reach more than 3，000 meters into the sky.  "There is a place called  Badwater that is the lowest area of land in the Western Hemisphere.  If there were water there，it would be 86 meters below the level of the ocean.

    In many areas of Death Valley it is easy to see where the ground has been pushed up strongly by movement deep in the Earth.  This movement has created unusual and beautiful rock formations. Some are red.  Others are dark brown，gray，yellow or black.  Other areas of rock look as if some huge creature heavily broke and twisted the Earth to create unusual, sometimes frightening shapes.
